Beauty DNA October 2016 Review

Beauty DNA - is a monthly subscription service that will send you one FULL SIZE skincare or hair care item each month, I’ve occasionally received two items. The cost is $25/month. They have a unique matching system, where you fill out your likes/dislikes profile and you shouldn’t ever receive items with ingredients that you just don't like. You will also never receive the same product twice.
Cost: $25/month
How Often: Monthly
Ships To: United States via UPS Ground

Beauty DNA will send a very detailed info booklet to explain why your received the items and why they are a match for you, including what ingredients that you don't like and are not included in your product match.
This month I had two cards included, which means I was receiving two items!!
Key West Aloe Aloethera Intensive Body Moisturizer - $28. I love Key West Aloe products. This is a really good deep moisturizer. I only wish the fragrance was a little more pleasant, it smells what I can best describe as "natural", but it does wear off quickly. It is cruelty free and paraben free.
Nexxus Promend Heat Protecting Mist - $21.99. I've been using this for a couple weeks now. It's a great heat protector before using the flat iron. I like that it sprays out in a fine mist.
This months box has an approximate retail value of $49.99. It's always fun to get an extra item, and I like both the items that were sent this month. I'll be using both of these down to the last drop.

Glossybox October 2016 Review

GlossyBox - is a beauty subscription box that sends five products each month. There are a lot of brands that you cannot get here in the US. They send makeup, skincare, beauty tools, and other related items. They have a great rewards program that allows you to get a free box annually, and more often if you refer friends.
Cost: $21/month or $222/annually
How Often: Monthly
Ships To: United States (excludes Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico) and Canada via USPS.

GlossyBox has the best boxes in the business. I often use them for shipping as well, since they are so sturdy.
This is the first look at the box.
Decleor Hydrating Oil Serum – 5 ml $24. K loves getting oils in boxes, so this was really great for her. I wish the size was a little bigger.
Anti-Hair Fallout Niacin3 & Caffeine Root Stimulator Spray - $7.99. Full size was included. This helps hair grow and keep your hair from breaking off. Not sure what to do with this yet, I think it needs to go to someone who can really use it.
Unani Il-luminate Milk Cleanser – $18. Full size was included. This is a nice gentle face wash made with milk cleanser.
Emite Make Up Lip & Cheek Tint – $19. This is full size. This is a really pretty color. I see if more as a lip gloss than a cheek tint, but I suppose it would work for both. I like the bottle.
Masque Bar by Look Beauty Brightening Sheet Mask – $3. I think face masks are one of my favorite items to receive in boxes. This has aloe and I think it would be great after too much sun exposure. I think I'll toss in my bag for my next beach vacation.
This months box has an approximate value of $71.99. I think my favorite item this month is the aloe face mask. K loved the oil.

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair - 1 oz $9. I received a full size version of this in another box. I'm certain it works well, but unfortunately, it's a little too scented for me to like it.
Mally Volumizing Mascara - $20. Full Size was included. I never get bored of trying new mascaras.
Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle - 1 oz $10. This is a good dry shampoo for oil control, gets great reviews, and is probably the most requested (on MSA) dry shampoo I've seen.
Tatcha Deluxe Soothing Hand Cream – 10 ml $8. We are big fans of Tatcha. K called this immediately.
Spongelle Freesia Pear Body Wash Infused Buffer - $15. This is a Limited Edition sponge. I know these are really popular, I just wish they would offer fruit only versions and skip the flower ingredients.
Doucce Freematic Eyeshadow Single in Kristi - $8.75. This is just a single portion. I have not opened the seal  so I can still trade it. Very pretty color.
This months box has an approximate value of $71. That is a great value for a monthly sample box. I love that full size items were also included.

Friendship Socks - The Rockstar - $15. These socks are fun. K called these because she really likes fun socks. I reminded her socks come in pairs, and it's ok to wear them as a matching pair.
Kitsch Patch Stick - $8. These are meant to be attached to a laptop or phone, for a cute accent. It can be also placed on denim, which is another cute idea. It totally reminds me of something from the '70's, although I'm not entirely sure why
Olivia Palermo X Ciate London, The Cheekbone Cheat Blush Bronzer Duo - $32. This is a really nice duo set. I think it's convenient to add both color and bronzer together. I might just keep this.
This months mini box has an approximate retail value of $55. I love the original and cute items they general come up with. This is a great starter sub for anyone thinking of getting into subscriptions, or a great addition to what you may already be receiving.

Circ Cell Skin Care Red Algae Clarifying Masque Review

Cell Cell Skin Care Red Algae Clarifying Masque - $70. We received this in a subscription box. Being the Marine Biologist that I am, I was so excited to try this mask. I love algae and haven't gotten to try any luxe facial products that contained algae before. Now, imagine my surprise when I was reading through the ingredients and red algae wasn't listed anywhere!

The only organism listed on their ingredients is Usnea Barbata, which is a lichen that grows on trees and is known by the common name of old man's beard. What is a lichen you ask? Well "Like the slime molds, lichens are a hybrid; a symbiotic relationship between an algae and a fungus." (Edgar Tricia, 2013). A lichen is NOT algae, they are in completely different animal kingdoms!!!! Red Algae is a high quality ingredient in skin care that is a rich source of polysaccharides which are believed to enhance the skin's barrier functions and improve hydration and moisture retention. Some research is stating seaweed may even have skin lighting and anti-acne properties. Randy Schueller, a cosmetic chemist and editor-in-chief of the Beauty Brains cautions that while "There's enough science here to say that algae, seaweed and kelp may provide some benefits but of course it depends on the specific type of extract, how it's processed, and how much is used" If you want to read further about the science behind the algae in skin care this was a interesting brief article.

I went onto Circ Cell Skincare's Facebook page to see how they were promoting this product. I noticed that they were very careful to not directly state that this mask actually contains red algae. But their words sure lead to the consumer to believe it does!
After rereading the ingredients over and over again, I wondered if other beauty products that claimed to have red algae in them actually listed it in their ingredients. I read through Sephora's website and filtered products that contain algae, and I was pleased to see that other companies actually listed either the species of algae or stated "algae extract".

This product really upset me in so many ways. First of all, I felt really lied to and deceived. Most consumers wouldn't even notice that red algae is absent in the ingredients list and think that they are actually getting the benefits of algae in this product. One Youtube video I viewed actually stated "This product is packed full of algae" because the name is so deceiving.

I'm very dissappointed that the company is putting the "red algae" label on it and charging a premium price for it, but consumers aren't actually getting the benefits of the high quality ingredient. This should be labeled as a "tee tree oil face mask" or an "essential oil face mask", not named red algae. Second, for $70 there is no excuse not to have algae in it. This is an expensive face mask, and I expect that when I pay that price there better be high quality ingredients. Third, this company states that their products combine high-quality ingredients with innovative technologies. They really seem to convey that they work with science to bring about the best products, and as an actual scientist this is insulting. It is very gimmicky. They play up the science aspect by labeling their other products as "geothermal clay cleanser" and "ABO +/- Blood Serum". Geothermal energy means heat produced by and stored in the earth, which I guarantee is not bottled in that little bottle (The blood serum does not contain actual blood). I am so displeased with the way that Circ Cell Skincare is deceiving consumers with the labeling of this particular product. I am still determined to try an algae face mask and I hope to try other brands that are being transparent and truthful with their marketing. I am happy to run across this product though, because it has made me more mindful about checking ingredients in all the products I purchase and not to fall for marketing gimmicks.
